Gateway Community College

This issue details innovative ways that community colleges and high schools can work together to help students navigate the difficult passage from secondary to higher education. The contributors discuss new state and federal policies that will help facilitate collaboration by bridging the administrative gap between the K-12 and community college systems, and analyze several types of collaborative programs, including tech-prep initiatives, concurrent enrollment, and "middle college high schools" run by community colleges for at-risk high school students. They also provide detailed case studies of actual collaborations between specific community colleges and high school districts, discuss legal problems that can arise when high school students enroll in community colleges, and more. This is the 111th issue of the quarterly journal "New Directions for Community Colleges.

Columbia State Community College is proud to have the distinction of being the first community college created in Tennessee. Construction of the new campus began in October 1965, and the first director of admissions, W.O. Johnson, was able to offer a schedule of classes for the fall of 1966. The first class of 363 students met in various buildings around Columbia. When the campus was completed in 1967, Lady Bird and Lyndon B. Johnson were on hand for the dedication. Decades later, Columbia State Community College continues to be at the forefront of the state's educational system and provides a nurturing environment for its students. This pictorial history of Columbia State Community College was published in conjunction with the college's 40th anniversary. The authors were careful to select a variety of images that depict the evolution of the Columbia campus, as well as its centers and sites, and provide readers with an enjoyable volume.

Ozarks Technical Community College - Ozarks Technical Community College is a "community technical college" in Springfield, Missouri, established by Springfield and thirteen surrounding public school districts on April 3, 1990. As the region's new comprehensive community college, Ozarks Technical Community College provided an open admission, two-year college with a focus on technical education.

Seattle Community College District - The Seattle Community College District is a group of community colleges located in Seattle, Washington. Its main divisions are North Seattle Community College, Seattle Central Community College (including the Wood Construction Center and Seattle Maritime Academy), South Seattle Community College (including the Duwamish Industrial Education Center), and the Seattle Vocational Institute.

Bluegrass Community and Technical College - Bluegrass Community and Technical College, formerly known as Lexington Community College, is a community college located next to the University of Kentucky campus, in the shadow of Commonwealth Stadium. It is a member of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.

TVI Community College - TVI Community College, formally the "Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute" is the community college for metropolitan Albuquerque, New Mexico. By June of 2006, TVI is expected to be renamed to either "Central New Mexico Community College" or "Community College of Central New Mexico", pending board approval.
